Seven Most Common Pitfalls

Marketing on the internet is growing as the number of consumers are turning to various sites to meet their needs. Mobile devices and smartphones hold a large part in this and are increasing at an incredible speed.  This is bound to provide many opportunities to new entrepreneurs who are looking to start monetising in Internet Marketing. However, there are errors that people can make, and marketing pitfalls can present setbacks to beginners and experienced individuals alike. Those who are first starting to realize the benefits of marketing on the web should be sure to avoid the following seven most common pitfalls.

Overloading on Information
1. Overloading on Information

The amount of information that is contained on the web is simply staggering, and it can easily overwhelm the most experienced marketer. It is impossible for any one person to learn all of the strategies that can be used successfully within their lifetime, which is wh no one should even attempt to do so. It is smarter to focus on one strategy, master it and move on and to learn a second one which can be used to complement the first.

In addition, there are numerous webinars that are offered, and though they may seem exciting, it is not essential to attend each one. If they do not fit into your time parameters, see if you can get it on a replay.

These courses do offer valuable information, and they can help anyone establish themselves on the web. However, be sure to finish the first one before moving on to subsequent seminars.

Take Action2. Take Action on What You Learn
I have attended numerous courses, but I thought I would wait until a later time to try to implement the strategies I had acquired. This pitfall can prove disastrous, and it is essential to put learning into action at the right time.

I learned some of these tips from others, and I am putting them into practice. You can also benefit from all of the things you learn from others, but it does no good until they are utilized. This also helps to retain information. Things that are not used every day or week are quickly forgotten.

Time management is another topic for later, but it may be needed if there are not enough hours in the day to use everything that has been learned.

Perfection is Impossible
3. Perfection is Impossible

Everything does not need to be accomplished in one day, just like Rome was not built over night. During the first year on the web, it is imperative not to get frustrated with setbacks. It takes time to develop perfection, and the lesson to be learned is to keep trying.

Strategies also do not need to be perfect to succeed, and sometimes you may be wasting time fine tuning techniques while others are capitalizing on your absence.

Be true to yourself and success will come out of that. Do not worry about trying to keep up with another blog; people are interested in what you have to say, so say it.

Make Money Do Not Waste It

4. Make Money Do Not Waste It.
Most marketers are on the web to capitalize on their time spent. Spending money on every webinar that’s offered can eat away at the profits that are made and take time from your own endeavours. Many of these courses cover the same ground, and in the past I’ve even bought some courses that taught the exact same thing, but which were marketed differently.

Focus on learning one strategy until it is mastered. The first thing is not to get excited by every webinar that comes along. There is plenty of time for them. Master one thing at a time and this will help you make money.

Reinvest the money that is made in yourself and your business. This is the way every company works, and it is essential to keep improving yourself through the capital you have acquired.

Managing Time5. Managing Time
Working from home presents its own challenges and I have often succumbed to spending too much on my internet marketing strategies. It is so easy to get caught up in the moment, that I forget how long I’ve been working. This is ultimately fruitless and will quickly lead to burn out and frustration.

For this reason, it is a good idea to prepare a time budget. Fill in the hours that you are able to devote to your marketing on the net, and stick with it. Make sure there is time for yourself as well as your family, and your marketing life will be more successful.

Isolation6. Isolation
The internet can be alienating, but there are millions of people who work on the internet every day. They may have more experience, and they have insight into many things. However, they can also learn a thing from you.

Connect with other marketers on their pages or through social media sites. You will be glad you did, and so will they. Great minds think alike, and collaboration can be used to increase overall results. Find someone you work well with and use this to help bolster each other.

Persistence7. Persistence
Success may take time and effort, so don’t get frustrated. Realize there are always setbacks, but keep working towards the goals that you have set. This pitfall is one of the most dangerous, and it causes many marketers to give up. This is the wrong thing as success will not happen in one day. The internet is not a place to make a million dollars overnight, that is what Las Vegas and the lottery are for.

Try your strategy for at least 90 days before you decide to give up on it. If you don’t see results after three months, then move on.

Remember that the efforts you show today are the rewards you will reap tomorrow.

Internet marketing will not provide anyone with millions overnight, but it can still be a financially rewarding way to spend time. There is a lot of money to be made, and it is essential to learn the strategies that work and avoid the pitfalls that threaten successful techniques. This will help make goals achievable and provide the rewards that online marketing offers.

Technical Road Block – What can I do

technical road blockNo matter how many times people tell you that you don’t have to be technical to be an Internet Marketer, you will find it unavoidable and will hit a technical road block at some point or another. It’s a bit like a car, anyone after receiving the correct training can drive a car but it doesn’t mean you know how to change a flat tyre or top up the washer bottle, but you probably know someone that does and that’s how you get by.

When you are an Internet Marketer you should embrace the technology and not let it scare you. Like the example with the car, find someone that “knows how” if you hit a problem. They may resolve your problem but always if possible get them to explain in layman terms the topic around your area of concern. Sometimes you will find that it’s not as difficult as you thought and it was maybe just the terminology that was confusing you. Once you have this knowledge it could save you a lot of time in the future or you may come across someone else that needs your help.

Of course there are technical tasks that make no sense at all in doing yourself. Pay for an expert to do this work, they will complete it ten times faster and the chances are the quality of the work will be 100% better. If you are outsourcing a good place to head over to is www.fiverr.com or www.elance.com. From my experience you should also get yourself involved in a group / community of other Internet Marketers, as the amount of diverse skills you will find within these groups is amazing.

community

Communities are great places to find a “skills exchange” as well as making new friends to share ideas and tips with. You may be good at copywriting but not so good when it comes to technology. I guarantee you will find someone in the opposite position to you. If you look at some leaders like Tony Robbins or Richard Branson, they didn’t get where they are today by doing every thing themselves, they leveraged the teams and technical ability around them.

A final note before I finish, and this goes for most challenges in life, is that when you have a technical task that you need to complete, break it down into smaller chunks. What you are doing in effect is making yourself a system to complete this task. Once you have a system in place it is a lot easier to grow and up scale your business. And remember make life easy for yourself and actively get involved in a community with like minded individuals as you will be amazed by the rewards.

Happy New Year 2012

Happy New Year to you, I hope you enjoyed the holiday season and everything is well with you.

One of the things I really felt last year even though I know it was the same for the other years is how quickly time flew by. So this year is all about focus and putting systems in place that will utilise and leverage my time more appropriately. I have monetary goals but time and freedom is one of the big ones for me. We all know people that are rich when it comes to money but poor when it comes to freedom.

I’ve updated my vision board put a copy in my notebook along with my 2012 goals. I don’t know if it was the high I finished 2011 on but I’m really looking forward to what this year.

So if you are still to write your goals or put together a vision board get cracking J

I wish you all the success and health for 2012.

Attraction Marketing

attraction marketing

A friend and I were meeting up the other week for a coffee. He was travelling from the US on business and usually we only get to chat to each other over Skype so it was good to meet up for a change. Anyway while we where discussing things, we got onto the subject of “Attraction Marketing”.

He works in the Search Engine Optimization world. That’s right, he sells SEO. If you own a business I bet you hate him because the constant barrage of phone calls / emails can be overwhelming. But you know you need him.

The first few months of selling SEO he found to be very challenging. Most hung up on him, threw him out or were just plain mean to him. Being in sales at first was really hard for him, and he had to figure out how to overcome this rejection. A colleague had given him a book in which he started to read about Attraction Marketing.

What is Attraction Marketing you may ask? Attraction Marketing is using marketing techniques to deliver a message to the consumer of what you offer, and how it will benefit them before they purchase it. He first asked himself the question of how he could get people to call him and ask about SEO, instead of him calling and selling to them. The question was daunting. To make Attraction Marketing work you need to think outside the box. What would make anyone want to call and ask about SEO? The answer was clear; he would offer his services to the Chamber of Commerce Small Business Development centre as an SEO “expert” and work as a consultant. Then, people would come to HIM and ask for advice. Well, it worked! The Chamber of Commerce went out and found small and medium businesses that needed a trusted source to give them information about SEO for their business. The Chamber would pay him $50 an hour to consult with each business for three hours. The catch was he wasn’t allowed to “pitch” his company while he was consulting, unless it was after the three hours.

However, when a business owner had spent three hours with him explaining their business, increasing his trust and learning about SEO in a non aggressive manner, his close rate on these sessions became 100 percent. That’s right, he was genius, too good to be true. He got paid to generate leads and close sales twice. Once by his company and once by the Chamber of Commerce. He had figured out how to sell SEO using Attraction Marketing techniques. He was successfully able to show these businesses the advantages of SEO and how it would affect their business and they were hanging on every word and taking notes! This was new to him, this had NEVER happened in a sales pitch. Not only had he figured out a way to market his product, but he was also able to teach small and medium businesses the power of SEO. In the process, he was able to teach himself the power of Attraction Marketing.

The Attraction Marketing Techniques will save you many hours of wasted time through traditional marketing. When deciding how to market your product and services just think, “what would I want?” It sounds silly, but you are a consumer as well, and if you are reading this you probably care more than most and have put more thought into what a consumer wants.

Google+ and What it Means for Your Business

Michael Stelzner from Social Media just completed an excellent interview with Jesse Stay on the subject of Google+ which I have re-posted a snip below. The full post can be found here as well as a MP3 version.

Post by Michael Stelzner
I interviewed Jesse Stay, author of the brand-new book Google+ for Dummies, Portable Edition. Jesse has also written three more books about Facebook, including Facebook Application Development for Dummies.

In this interview we talked about Google+, why it’s different and what it means to businesses. We’re also going to talk about the mobile side of Google+, where Google might be headed and much more.

Mike: Jesse, let’s start with why Google+? What makes it unique? Why should people consider it when they’ve already got Facebook accounts and Twitter accounts and LinkedIn and beyond?

Planning Utilisation Equals Optimising Your Profit

Starting a BusinessStarting a business is no small feat, a lot of people only dream of owning their own business, some have taken the plunge and will openly tell you their struggles getting it off the ground and some will even say that it became too much to handle, which forced their arm to throw in the towel.

There are a lot of things that people don’t realise when they start a business apart from a large assumption that they have a fabulous product, which will attract an endless stream of customers.

In reality you will often find yourself working long hours at the computer, dealing with complex computer systems, writing endless emails and chasing people for the smallest of things. It can all feel very overwhelming and you will wonder if it is worth it.

There are however some things you can do to help yourself, but don’t get me wrong I’m not about to say there is some magic button you press and all the pain disappears over night.

Planning in any business is vital and if you don’t have a plan in place you need to get one. Your business runs on cash-flow and you need to understand / plan where cash enters your business and where it leaves your business, draw it out on a note pad or a board, you will be surprised where all your cash leaves your business.

Once you understand the entry & exit points of your cash-flow then you can start to make plans that only focus on tasks which attract cash coming into your business, that is the reason you are in business, isn’t it?

It’s very easy to full into the trap of spending too much time on the wrong thing, just because you feel you are working hard doesn’t necessarily mean that the task is returning you a profit. A little like always checking your email, why is it that people feel they have to respond to emails as soon as they land in their in-box?

The night before sit down and have a think about what you want to achieve the next day. Start off small but dedicate an hour or two to focus on these tasks and make sure you stick to it. The next day don’t fall into automatically checking your emails as your first task, how about finishing off that marketing campaign you never seem to have time to complete.

Understanding your strengths and weaknesses will put you in good stead for this, if you know you have a list of tasks to complete in front of you the chances are you would start with the simplest because you are very good at it and it is one of your strengths. Whereas, the more difficult tasks would just sit there, because they sit within your weak zone.

The best way to handle difficult tasks is to break each one down in to smaller chunks and complete them one piece at a time. Over time this type of task will get easier and easier. You will wonder why you ever fussed over it and always left it at the bottom of the pile.

Some tasks though are very time consuming and you need to know what is best to complete yourself and just as importantly what is best to outsource to others. Designing a website and putting together fancy graphics would take me days maybe weeks to complete, and to be honest I don’t think the outcome would look that great. On the other hand I could outsource this work for a small fee and have it completed in half the time and the result would be a hundred times better.

If the sound of outsourcing seems daunting then don’t worry it is not as complicated as you think, and when you have done it once or twice you will see how easy it is and reap the benefits it brings to your business. Lets take my example of designing a web site with fancy graphics. If you go to Elance.com or Fiverr.com you will find thousands of individuals who are experts in this field and are eagerly waiting to carry out this task.

Both sites are very easy to use; with Elance you post a job that describes your needs and the skills you are looking for such as web design. They then send it out to their vast network of contractors who are waiting to work on new projects such as yours. Fiverr is slightly different to Elance in that every task only costs $5, so I would use them for minor tasks such as small graphics. You just search for someone that can do your work then submit your request. Both can be accept PayPal or a credit card.

The time you save by outsourcing totally outweighs the small fee you will need to pay. Not only will you be receiving a more professional piece of work, it will also enable you to focus on more profitable tasks and ones where your strengths lie.

I hope you have found this article helpful and it has given you a couple ideas on how best to run your business. A little planning and understanding how to best utilise your time will be a positive shift to delivering you a profitable return. I wish you all the best and good luck.

The Difference Between a Facebook Profile Page and a Facebook Page

I got an email from one of our new members the other day asking “What is the difference between your Facebook Profile Page and a Facebook Page”. As well as “How do you setup a Facebook Page”.

First of all your personal page is called a Profile Page and Facebook recognises this to be all about you and nothing to do with your business. Whereas a Facebook Page (also known as Fan Page) is all about your business.

The way you can tell the difference between the two is that a Profile Page has friends listed on the left hand menu whereas a Facebook Page does not have friends, it has ‘Likes’ list in the left hand menu.
Facebook PageAs I said before Facebook the company view your Profile Page as everything about you, and sharing with your friends what you are getting up to, but not promoting your business. A Facebook Page on the other hand is all about promoting your business.

Over the years you may have created a large list of business friends on your Profile Page so you are probably wondering ‘how am I supposed to interact with them’. For now, until you create a ‘Facebook Page’ I recommend the 80:20 rule, where 80% of the time you use your Profile Page for updating your friends about you and the other 20% promoting your business

So how do I create a ‘Facebook Page’?

Facebook make it very easy for you to setup up a Facebook Page, just click the link below:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php

Follow the step by step instructions and you will be well on your way to creating a superb page to promote your business.
